DIY Tips for Packing Clothes and Books in Monsoon Relocation

Relocating during the monsoon season can be a challenging experience, especially when it comes to packing delicate belongings like clothes and books. Excessive moisture, unexpected rain, and high humidity can easily damage these items if not packed properly. If you're planning to shift during the rainy season, following a few smart DIY tips can help you protect your valuables and make your move stress-free.

1.Use Waterproof Packing Materials

The first and most important step is to ensure that your packing materials are waterproof. Use thick plastic bags, zip-lock pouches, or vacuum-sealed bags for clothes. For books, wrap them in plastic sheets or bubble wrap before placing them in cartons. This extra layer prevents water from seeping in during transit.

2.Pack Clothes in Layers

Instead of stuffing all clothes into one big suitcase or carton, divide them into smaller waterproof bags. Place silica gel packets or moisture absorbers inside to keep clothes fresh and prevent any damp smell. Rolling clothes instead of folding them can save space and reduce wrinkles as well.

3. Sort and Declutter Before Packing

The monsoon season is not the best time to carry unnecessary items. Before packing, sort your clothes and books carefully. Donate or discard what you no longer need. This not only lightens your load but also reduces the number of boxes that need waterproofing.

4.Protect Books with Double Covering

Books are highly vulnerable to moisture and must be given extra care. Wrap each book individually in newspaper or butter paper before placing them in a plastic sheet. Once packed, arrange them vertically in sturdy cartons so that they don't get bent or damaged. Adding silica gel packets inside the carton will help in absorbing excess moisture.

5.Use Suitcases and Plastic Bins

Instead of relying only on cardboard boxes, try using suitcases and plastic storage bins. These are sturdier, water-resistant, and provide better protection against dampness. For clothes, hard-shell suitcases work best, while airtight plastic bins are ideal for storing books."

6.Seal Boxes Properly

When using cartons for clothes or books, make sure you seal them with strong packing tape. Reinforce the edges and corners, as water often seeps through these weak points. Using stretch film over the cartons can add another protective layer.

7.Label and Keep Essentials Handy

Label each box clearly as “Clothes” or “Books” so that movers handle them carefully. Also, keep a small waterproof bag with a few sets of clothes and important books or documents with you for easy access in case of delays during shifting.
